Wire EDM

Wire EDM and hole-drilling EDM for hardened materials, delicate profiles, tight inside corners and features that conventional cutting cannot reach cleanly.

Overview

Precision profiles without cutting-force drama.

Wire EDM gives us a clean way to cut hardened materials, fine profiles and geometry that is difficult to machine conventionally. It is especially useful when the part needs tight features without the deflection or cutting pressure of a milling cutter.

Best Machine Inc. supports EDM work with submerged wire EDM and hole-drilling EDM capability. That lets us handle start holes, intricate profiles, hardened components, tooling details and secondary features that need controlled accuracy.

EDM sits alongside our milling, turning and inspection processes, so we can combine operations when a part needs both conventional machining and electrical discharge machining.

Why Best Machine Inc.

Wire EDM for the features machining can’t reach.

Best Machine Inc. has run wire EDM in-house since 2004, giving us a way to cut tight internal profiles and hardened materials that conventional milling and turning can’t reach. Our Makino wire EDM and EDM DrillMate hole-popping systems run alongside our milling and turning centers, all under one ISO 9001:2015-certified roof in Fremont, NH.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is wire EDM used for?

Wire EDM cuts tight internal profiles, sharp corners and complex geometries in hardened or conductive metals that would be difficult or impossible to machine conventionally.

What materials can be wire EDM’d?

Wire EDM works on any electrically conductive metal, including hardened tool steels, stainless steel, titanium and exotic alloys, regardless of hardness.

Do you offer wire EDM services near Manchester, NH?

Yes. Our shop in Fremont, NH is a short drive from Manchester, Nashua and the rest of southern New Hampshire, and we regularly hand-deliver wire EDM work to customers in the area.

Can wire EDM hold tight tolerances on complex shapes?

Yes. Wire EDM is well suited to tight-tolerance, complex-profile work, and every part can be verified on our Renishaw-equipped CMM before it ships.

What’s the difference between wire EDM and hole-popping EDM?

Wire EDM uses a thin wire electrode to cut through material and is ideal for complex profiles and cutouts. Hole-popping (sinker/hole) EDM, run on our EDM DrillMate, is used for precise small-diameter holes, including in hardened materials. We run both in-house.
